Gatekeeper Improvement Act: knowing the steps is one thing, choosing the right intervention makes the difference

Employers, HR professionals and case managers are often well acquainted with the steps of the Gatekeeper Improvement Act. The problem analysis, the action plan and the evaluation moments are important parts of every reintegration process. Yet in practice it appears that following these steps does not automatically lead to a successful return to work.
The difference is often made by choosing the right intervention at the right time.

From process to result

The Gatekeeper Improvement Act provides direction for the reintegration process. But the law does not prescribe which intervention is most effective in a specific situation. That calls for professional trade-offs from HR, case managers, employers and other concerned experts.

It is precisely here that questions often arise:

  • When is coaching enough?
  • When is psychological guidance needed?
  • When does an employment expert study have added value?
  • At what time do you use mediation?
  • How do you prevent a file from stagnating unnecessarily?

Accomplishing these questions requires knowledge of interventions én insight into the employee's situation.

Why timing is so important

An intervention can be excellent in terms of content, but less effective when deployed at the wrong time.

Take, for example, an employee who is in danger of dropping out due to long-term workload. At an early stage, coaching can help restore load capacity, direction and work balance. When complaints have been further developed, psychological counselling may be a more appropriate choice.

The same applies to industrial disputes. While many organizations try to have the conversation themselves for a long time, timely mediation can prevent a conflict from escalating and absenteeism from increasing further.

Early action often increases the chance of a successful recovery and reintegration.

Common interventions within absence

Coaching

Coaching is regularly used for:

  • Stress complaints
  • Endangered dropout
  • Workprint issues
  • Strengthening your own direction

The aim is to provide employees with tools to better deal with challenges in the work and increase sustainable employability.

Psychological guidance

When mental complaints play a greater role, psychological guidance can contribute to:

  • Recovering mental load capacity
  • Reduction of stress or anxiety complaints
  • Strengthening coping skills
  • Sustainable return to work

Labour expert research

A labor expert examination can be valuable if there is uncertainty about:

  • The possibilities within your own work
  • Appropriate work within the organization
  • Reintegration in track 1 or track 2
  • The next steps within the process

This often causes movement again in files that are in danger of getting stuck.

Mediation

When cooperation is under pressure or there is a labor dispute, mediation can help to:

  • Restore communication
  • Mutual understanding in creëren
  • Prevent escalation
  • Increase reintegration opportunities

The correct intervention starts with the correct analysis

No two default files are the same. The cause of the absence, the employee's taxability, the working conditions and the relationship between employer and employee all play a role.

Therefore it is important not only to look at the obligations under the Gatekeeper Improvement Act, but also at the question:

What does this employee need to move forward at this time?

A carefully chosen intervention can be a major turning point in the recovery and reintegration process.

Investing in intervention science

For human resources professionals and case managers, it is becoming increasingly important not only to know interventions, but also to be able to deploy and substantiate them effectively.

By combining knowledge of intervention science with the frameworks of the Gatekeeper Improvement Act, professionals can better advise, switch faster and contribute to sustainable solutions for both employee and employer.
